Free Methods for Driving Traffic to Your BlogI would like to start this post off by saying thank you SO very much to everyone who commented on my last post, “Drum Roll Please… My February Rocked!”  I have received so much support while on this journey and it just continues to inspire me to keep moving forward.

Building your own business is hard work in the beginning but it definitely will pay off in the end.  Very few people start making money right from the start and even if a few sales do come trickling in, they aren’t consistent.  But continuing to get your information out there for others to locate, that is what is going to get you noticed so others can see what you have to offer.

So now let’s dive into the topic of this post, “Free Methods for Driving Traffic to Your Blog”.  I believe it’s important for all those people who are still struggling and in search of ways to get their content noticed.  So, I have just the thing for you.

  • Post content on your blog on a regular basis.  Don’t abandon your blog or your readers.  Most blogs never see past their first year.  Don’t let that be you.  Stick with a posting schedule whether it’s every day, 3 times a week or once a week.  Just be consistent and only write content that is helpful and beneficial to your readers.
  • Comment on other people’s blogs.  That’s right, visit other blogs, read what others are sharing and be sure to leave good comments.  You can really build up a great following and get other people to visit your blog as well.  Want some help with this?  Visit Tristan Higbee’s Blogging Bookshelf Blog Directory.
  • You’ve got to have a Facebook account so be sure to share your posts with your friends on your wall.  If you are building a business, create a Fan Page and help others learn what you are doing.
  • Along with a Facebook account comes trusty old Twitter.  Be sure to tweet your blog posts (because they are helpful to others) and retweet your follower’s content as well.  This comes in real handy as you start blog commenting.  Share their posts with your followers because it’s just downright good.
  • Create that YouTube channel and get some videos up.  You can start by doing powerpoint slides and just showing others how to do something but be sure and move up to shooting some “How To” videos because they really helps others learn how to do certain things.  It can really bring you more visitors.
  • You can also distribute those videos to other video networks such as Metacafe or DailyMotion.  Just Google video channels and you’ll find a big list.
  • Join LinkedIn and create your profile.  Connect with others who may possibly need your help and build relationships.  It won’t bring you a ton of traffic but every little bit helps.
  • Get to writing articles and post them to EZine Articles.  With the recent Google change they only want quality content so don’t slouch.  You may not get a lot of visitors from your articles but you will receive backlinks to your blog.
  • Use Pingler to ping your blog posts and articles.  This helps tell the search engines that you have fresh new content that has just been published.
  • Submit your blog to blog directories.  This can be a little time consuming but can help get backlinks to your blog.
  • Social bookmark your posts but also be sure to bookmark other people’s posts as well.  When you are commenting and locate a really great post, be sure to bookmark that as well.  You can build up a good following.
  • Create an RSS feed and submit that to as many RSS directories as possible. This can really help get a lot of backlinks to your blog as well.
  • Visit Yahoo Answers and answer some questions related to your niche. Always remember to leave relevant helpful information and a link to your blog.  I have found this to be a great way to not only help others resolve their problems but it gets them curious to see what you have to offer.
  • Take some of your content from your blog posts and articles, rewrite them and then create a PDF report.  Post these PDF’s to Scribd.  Great way to get your content out there.
  • Create other free Web 2.0 properties such as a blogger blog, WP.com blog, Squidoo lens or Hubpages and write quality content. These sites have high PR rankings so it can bring traffic back to your blog. This is a great way to build backlinks to your site but don’t promote any affiliate links.  Your main purpose is to build links back to your blog.
  • Write more helpful content and post them to Google docs. It’s a really great resource and always be sure to include your link at the bottom of your article.
  • Visit forums in your niche and start interacting with others. Include your blog link in your signature. Only add value in the conversations and never ever spam.
  • You will find a lot of really quality blogs and bloggers in blog networks. It’s another great place to find quality blogs to comment on. The top 2 that I have found are Blog Engage and Blokube.
  • Create free eBooks and reports by taking some of your blog posts or articles and convert them to a PDF. Include your links to your blog or offer and submit them to the free eBook sites. Really powerful method!
  • A really cool thing I learned just recently is to write an eBook or report that has really valuable information and sell it for $5 on Fiverr.com.  Not only can you make a little money but you can also help get traffic back to your blog.
  • Write lists posts like as this one. The search engines love lists and people will bookmark your post so they can revert back to it at a later date.

Other methods can be guest posting on other people’s blogs.  Once you start commenting on other blogs and building relationships, ask if you can write a guest post.  It’s great experience and with time you will become more comfortable writing.

So those are some ways for driving traffic to your blog for free.  I know there are many more ways such as posting on free classified ads and putting some photos on Flickr.

Now, be sure to leave me a comment and share other ideas you may have that I did not mention here.  People are always searching for fresh ideas of how they can get their content in front of others.

In my post next week I will share with you how you can ramp up your efforts now that we have our blog getting plenty of visitors, your lists is growing and the sales are coming in.  This is real exciting and I’m anxious to share with you what the next step is to driving even more traffic to your site.  So, be sure to come back next week.

Now, get out there and get to work.  Start promoting your blog and getting some traffic through any of the methods I mentioned above.  With time, you will start to see your traffic increase just like I have.  It’s a lot of work but the end results is so worth it.

See you next week!

    Hi Adrienne,

Good job on this list, it’s pretty extensive. The only things I can think to add are joining a Giveaway or doing a cross-post (where you ask a question of another blogger on their blog, and their readers have to come to your blog to read the answer, and back and forth a few times).

I like your idea of selling an ebook or report on Fiverr. I can see how giving good quality for so inexpensively can lead the customer to your blog and/or other products.

    Thanks,
    Peggy
P.S. I thought your last post about Febrary rocking was inspirational. Good job!

      Hi Peggy,

I’m learning about Giveaways right now so intend to report more about that a later date. Haven’t gotten far enough to include on this list. But I’ve never heard of cross posting. Now see, that’s a cool idea so thank you for sharing. I knew others would come up with more things I just wasn’t aware of!

I found out about selling reports at Fiverr from Robert Dempsey over at “Itenerant Entrepreneur“. Dedicated a post to this concept giving Robert ALL the credit on my main blog. Thought that was a really cool idea.

Thanks for saying something about my other post. I’ve been hard at it and really giving it my all. It’s definitely paying off little by little.

      Thanks again Peggy,

      Adrienne

Great list you have here for traffic methods. Some of them are really my favorites like blog commenting, articles submission.
I’m still on my way using those methods one after the other.Video marketing is in my “to do list” as it seems to be one of the most effective way to promote online.

Thanks for stopping by Alexis… Yeah, you really need to get that YouTube channel up and running. People do love “How To” videos and I do enjoy creating those. It’s a lot of fun.

Appreciate the comment and for stopping by. Your blog is coming along very nicely! Love the look!

    Hi Adrienne,
This is a helpful list but when do you sleep!
That aside, it is true that there are lots of ways to drive traffic.
We have put a personal ban on ezines articles. They are bullies of the worst kind. Can you believe they visited our blog and told us they would not include links to our blog because we had a post concerning Adswaps. They do not endorse Adswaps. However they said had we used the words ‘joint venture’ that would have been okay?! Interesting enough we wrote a whole article on Adswaps and it was accepted by them a couple of months beforehand.Other marketers have taken it and put it on their blog since. Semantics and hypocrisy – too much of it in the world already.
Squidoo and Hub pages have become our stopping off places for leaving articles now with no problems.

      Hi Allan and Dawn,

LOL!!! I eventually get sleep but I do have a lot to do. At least there are 2 of you so I’m sure splitting the work helps. My friends get so upset with me because I never have time to do anything. But that’s what building a business is all about right!

I did read the blog post that Chris Knight put out that they have lost half of their visitors already to their site so I guess they have decided to really crack down on what they believe will help them because of this recent Google change. Who knows, I truly have no idea. But, I will continue to use them because I really haven’t had any problems with them personally. I have around 270 articles live there and I took over 100 down of things I no longer promote. I’m sorry that you 2 have had this difficulty with them. Sounds like you have some alternative places to go though so that’s good news.

As always, I appreciate you stopping by and visiting and leaving me your comment. I always enjoy hearing your opinions.

      Have a wonderful weekend,

      Adrienne

    Hi Adrienne,

    Ditto what Peggy said,
A very extensive list there, and also ditto on using giveaways ..lol

Another method would be to give out free reports – no strings attached, no optin etc. – but make sure you have alinks back to your site in them.
E.G. This post could easily be a free pdf people could save to their pc’s – with a link at the end to visit your blog for more cool advice.
You could even make it a brandable report so it could contain the link of whomever gives it away again as well as your own link :)
(I’m sure you get the idea)

It’s been a very slow time for me since we started the giveaways so it’s time for me to analyze what’s going on and get back on track.

    Take Care

    Kerry

    • Adrienne says:

      Hey Kerry,

I’ve been wondering where the heck you went! Haven’t seen an update on your blog in awhile. I am just now getting around to diving into the giveaways, that’s how busy I’ve been. Of course, I’ve had some personal things going on as well that’s taken some time away from working. But I hope all of that is going well for you. Can’t wait to read and comment on your next post.

Have an excellent weekend and a very productive week!

  7. Sire says:

Hey Adrienne, you presented a whole lot of ways to generate traffic. Perhaps if you ever decide to take on Zaparena you can ad one more to the list ;)

I have a few videos on YouTube and although one has generated over 6000 views I never got any traffic from it? I reckon I must have missed something out when configured it and I need to look into it. Thanks for that,
Sire recently posted..Zaparena And How It Does Drive Traffic To Your Blog

    • Adrienne says:

I will probably update this list down the road and include even more after I incorporate a few more. Like you said, Zaparena just might be on that list.

6,000 views and not many visitors! Wow, that’s unbelievable Sire. I have one video I shot 2 years ago on my main channel that has 435,848 views. But, it’s titled “Just Believe” and it’s positive and uplifting quotes so it really has nothing to do with my business. I do love inspirational and positive quotes though so it’s really been a big hit. So I can understand the ton of views with no traffic to your site. I’m sure that yours relates to your business though. And you do know your keyword research so I’m scratching my head over that one too! Really odd!

      • Sire says:

That’s probably the problem, the video relates more to my photo blog whereas the link on my profile points to WassupBlog. I never worried about it though because the the purpose of my YouTube videos were always to highlight something in a post and not to generate traffic.

435,848 views is pretty good, great job.

        • Adrienne says:

Yeah, I know what you mean. Mine points to my main blog but it has nothing to do with the topic of the video. I just created it because I enjoy inspiring others and it’s been a big hit. Sounds like yours has as well. I guess I should have been promoting some type of personal development product but there weren’t any out there at the time that I was keen on promoting. Such is life… As long as people enjoy the video, that’s what counts.

  8. Usman from FirstHosting says:

Hi, I also commented on your old post, but did not matter if its not get accepted (As I saw it didnt get accepted) but thats not the problem, I’ve given you some message on it, hope you’ve read it.

and regarding traffic building you wrote good, but all we need is to be patient to see the results coming.

    • Adrienne says:

I do read all of my comments and I apologize if I didn’t accept that particular one. Some come off as spam so please forgive me if that was the case. Just glad to see you back and willing to give me another shot!

You are definitely right about that. You need to be patient. I’m only going into my 4th month with this and as you can see it takes time to build up traffic to your site. They are brand new and it takes work to get them recognized by the search engines. But it does work if you are consistent with your efforts. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to do this blog is to show others what I’m doing and how it’s working. So thank for your comment and glad you came back by.

I do a good bit of what is on this list but not all. I mainly put this list together so that others can see all the different ways you can start driving traffic to your site. I have a couple on that list that I’m fixing to jump into as well. Some people may not like to write articles so they would prefer to visit forums. Just wanted to give plenty of suggestions so everyone will know that are other options out there.

I write down what I need to accomplish each day and I usually get everything done. I wait and post to this blog at the end of the week mainly because I’m doing my weekly tasks driving traffic so I like to share what I’ve been doing or have learned in my post each week. I do certain tasks every single day though like visit the social media sites and add friends and followers. You just have to decide what you need to accomplish for that day and stick with it. You can do it, hang in there. I have faith in you girl! :-)

As always, your comment is always appreciated and I enjoy seeing you. I’ll be sure to share the love as well.

That means on picture sharing sites and personal/business websites as well.

Video is great too and it doesn’t have to be of your face if you’re shy. You can narrate with some slides or buy a royalty-free music score and record a quick 1 minute video.

Congratulations on the book, I know that is a time consuming project but well worth every minute.

I know the feeling… This blog isn’t even 4 months old and I’m under 175,000 in my Alexa ranking. Bravo to me! Crazy how visiting other blogs and corresponding with others can really benefit your site. I love meeting new people and visiting their blogs and seeing what they have to offer. I’m learning so much.

Appreciate you stopping by and looking forward to seeing you again.

Great post! I am currently using about half of this list. And I had plans to start some other things you mentioned as well as some other ideas.

You said post photos to flicker, but what about commenting on a photo you use from flicker? i.e. I search flicker commons for an image on twitter, I find one. I comment on the image telling the person I am using it on my blog and include a link.

Every time someone else searches for an image to use for something twitter related there is a good chance the same image will come up. there is also a good chance ppl using that same image have a similar blog as me and might want to click on over to my blog?

What do you think on this? I am going to try it with my next picture from flicker.

You also said something about pinger. Doesnt wordpress ping for you? and i thought ezine articles got killed with the latest google change?

Thanks for the additional ways to get traffic!!!

    • Adrienne says:

      Hi Eric,

Me too, got several things I’m fixing to implement as well.

Because like YouTube, you’ve probably noticed that a lot of really great photos get a LOT of views. That’s the point of posting one yourself. I also leave comments on ones I intend to use and thank them for posting it. People still get curious and may pop over to your site so commenting never hurts. I’ve just learned how beneficial it can be to post your own photos.

WordPress does automatically ping your site but you have to check your setup to see which sites it pings to. Pingler spreads it to a lot more blogging sites which is why it’s pretty beneficial to go that extra mile.

Articles got killer recently mainly because of the content farms. Article sites like Ezine Articles were hurt as well but they will never die. They are now looking for even more quality content and it’s best to provide 450 to 500 word articles now. I’m going to give them a little break for the moment but will pick it back up here soon. I’m just not going to waste my time rewriting content any longer because it’s getting killed in the search engines. It will only benefit you if you are on those sites searching for particular topics.

Hope that helps Eric. Appreciate your comment and nice to see you here.

I don’t have much success with Ezine articles. I did submit some articles but none of them brought any traffic.

I think the best ways to get traffic are Blogging communities, guest posting and blog commenting.

I never thought of using Fiverr to sell a ebook. Great idea.

Anyways, Thanks for sharing this awesome post and including Blokube in your list. Much Appreciated.

    Have a great day !!

    Hi Adrienne,

My brain is on over load with all this valuable information you have listed. Thanks for sharing them and you are doing a wonderful in the four months you have been blogging.

I just closed down an old blog and started a new one. The reason why I did that is I didn’t follow all of the tips I have learned from other bloggers consistently. The result of that is my SEO ranking were low.

On my new blog I’m going to implement these tips along with others ones to gain the results I have been looking for.

    Great Post!

      Hi Tisha,

LOL!!! I know what you mean. Being hit with SO many other options can drive someone insane. But like I’m sure you already know by now, chose a few you may enjoy and go for it. Master it until you start seeing results and then hit another one. That’s what I consistently do and as you might be able to tell, it’s working really well.

My main blog has been up for about 3 years now and still going strong. I decided to create this one to share my online journey with others and post what I’m doing each week. I think actually showing people has been very helpful. Sorry you had to start all over but being online is definitely a learning experience for us all. So I can relate to what you are saying.

Thanks Tisha and I appreciate your comment.

    Hi Adrienne,

Great list indeed, I want to implement as many of these ideas as possible! I am sort of a “fledgling” blogger as well even though I have been blogging for 7 months. There is so much to learn but I’m like you, I love learning new things!

I have to say this blogging has stretched me to no end but I am looking to do videos yet down the road and that will stretch me to the point of no return which is a good thing!!lol I am happy with where I am in blogging but not satisfied. Like you, I love writing and helping people so upward and onward I go!

I epsecially like the idea of posting to blog directories. I am a social person so the more people I can interact with the happier I am!:)

Look forward to seeing more of your content, you are creating some awesome content to think you were only blogging for four months! Way to go!!

    Take care,

But I’m not surprised at all, because you sure know the different ways to drive traffic to your blog, and I’m overwhelmed with your list here :-S

Blog carnivals sounds interesting, and I’d be watching your video tutorial too. I must say that I am focusing now on blogging communities and on posting consistently. I’ve never looked into article marketing, and I’ve also recently heard of the google change. I’ll be checking out your blog and other people’s blogs for updates about this recent change, and see if it’s still worth the effort.

Thanks for this comprehensive list, and I’ll definitely bookmark this :-) .

      Hi Rowena,

Thanks for the visit and glad we are connected through Clever Marketer as well. Happy that Jon introduced me to this community.

Blog carnivals have really been benefiting my efforts I must admit. Article marketing is still a good way to go because it’s free, a little time consuming though. As long as your content is unique and informational you should be okay. You might not get tons of traffic to your site through it, but it will build backlinks which will help overall. With the recent Google changes, content farms is what they are trying to shut down. That’s where sites are grabbing content from other sites and putting it on their site to fill the space. It’s also spun articles and rewritten information that is getting killed right now.

Glad you found this post helpful and I know I’ll be seeing you again soon.

Sharing what I’m doing to build a business and ways to generate traffic that work that others have also had success with. I hope to hear from you soon that you’ve gotten positive results. Remember, consistent action on your part is needed and it’s going to take some time. But in the end, it’s SO worth it!

Thanks for stopping by and for your comment. It’s very much appreciated. :-)

Thanks a lot Adrienne for your great reply. Most bloggers, wont reply, but you have shared excellent tips, and also a good support.

        Once again, thank you.

        • Adrienne says:

Any time Andrie… I know that the majority of bloggers that I visit do respond to their comments which is why I enjoy this so much. Sorry to hear that you haven’t had much luck with that. I do enjoy helping others learn and continue to grow while they are here.

And as you also mentioned, Scribd is a great way to upload content. I learned about it a few years ago actually but like most sites, you have to watch what you upload. I find a lot of really good content there. It’s a great site.

Thanks again, and have a blessed day!

  33. Nabil from Morning Sickness Remedies says:

Great list for newbies! I’ve tried pretty much everything and one of the tips I have heard time and time again is blog carnivals however I haven’t really been able to capitalize on them. I am starting to wonder if I am missing out. Any ideas?

    • Adrienne says:

It took me several months before I started seeing some results from blog carnivals but I’ve actually had a few people contact me about my posts and they’ve featured them on their blogs. I now am doing an interview with a guy who found me on a blog carnival. I was surprised too but the way I look at this is it takes me what one minute to put my information in! It’s free and it finally started paying off. That’s been my results from using them. Hope that helped some Nabil.

Nope, haven’t done that yet but I do agree. I just haven’t had time to work on it which is the only reason. This month has been crazy busy and then I’m heading out of town to a conference this next weekend so not sure when I’ll find the time to get that done. But it is on my agenda to do. I believe everything takes time to implement but the end results are so worth it! Wouldn’t you agree!
