If I knew then what I know now, my bank account sure would look a whole lot better! LOL!!! But seriously guys, when I started in affiliate marketing I was purchasing courses from these well known “gurus” and they were just providing bits and pieces of the puzzle on how to build my business. I was never shown the entire finished puzzle.
Sure, I had some success and I’m not about to fault what I did learn because I was making money on a pretty regular basis. It’s just I wasn’t receiving the entire truth of everything it really takes to have a successful affiliate marketing business. That’s why I wanted to do this post and share with you what I have learned up to this point. At least as much as I can share with you in this blog post that is.
So if you have been following my blog up until now then you know my story. If not, be sure and read my first post, “An Introduction to New Super Affiliate Blog“. I won’t bore you with the details again. Even I get tired of listening to myself. 
So if you are doing affiliate marketing or are interested in affiliate marketing then you are aware of what it’s all about. I believe the majority of people enter into this because you can start with little to no investment and you don’t have to build your own site or create your own product. That’s really a great way to start because there is a lot to learn before you can really get to that level.
I started out writing Squidoo lens and articles. Yep, that’s all I did and I was making consistent sales. But Squidoo changed their policies and no longer accepted a good bit of the affiliate marketing products I was promoting and even the ones they did accept, for some reason they stopped approving my lens (still scratching my head over that one). To say that I was upset would be putting it mildly because I did have all my eggs in one basket and we all know what happens when you do that right!
I also wasn’t building my own list because I was still pretty new to all of this and didn’t know what to share with my prospects. Remember, I was still missing some puzzle pieces so I wasn’t learning what to share with my list if I did build one. Who wants to look like they don’t know what they are doing. That “fake it until you make it” speech is really nice but it doesn’t work for everything.
So anyone entering affiliate marketing needs to acquire some skills first. Those skills need to include things like learning keyword research, how to locate profitable markets, find products people want, recognize who your prospects are, write articles, create Web 2.0 sites, do video marketing, socialize correctly on Facebook and Twitter, create your own blog, create unique content for your blog, how to track your traffic, how to write your autoresponder messages, and so much more. You can see there is a lot to learn even if you are just starting out slow.
The main goal everyone should be shooting for is to have your own product. There are really two benefits to this.
- People will start recognizing you as an expert in your field because of the product you are promoting
- You will receive 100% of the profits.

I think affiliate marketing is and awesome way to make money online. It’s really awesome seeing people able to make enough passive income off of affiliate marketing to live from. In my opinion passive income is the best income. Once you get it flowing it usually only goes up from there if you stick with it.
I plan on getting into affiliate marketing in the future once I build my traffic to a comfortable amount. I will be sure to come back and visit your blog on a regular basis. The majority of these so called ‘gurus’ are just snake oil salesmen and the ‘information’ they are touting is usually available free online anyway. They certainly wouldn’t get my money.
I have never been involved in affiliate marketing Adrienne, instead I produced three of my own products in a micro niche and I am busy at the moment on another specialised local market. I notice that Jim Cockrum was slating affiliate marketing recently but if affiliate marketing is working for you, then great, that’s all that matters.

If i was just starting out (or failing as i was when i first started out) I’d jump in with both feet. Finding spare time can be difficult when you don’t have someone to look after like your Mom. I’m trying to finish building my training site in my “spare time” and it’s becoming harder and harder to do.
I try to put myself in my prospects shoes and for those who truly want to have success online, they may need someone there to answer some questions every once in awhile or maybe they don’t fully understand something. Having someone to contact that can help is extremely important and I don’t think anyone should ever just promote a product and then disappear. At least that’s my opinion. I have to admit, I’d been doing affiliate marketing for some time and was having some luck but I needed more of an organized approach and learning more of what works and what doesn’t. I think the important thing for most people to realize is that there is more than one way to climb the mountain. Affiliate Marketing is one.
For some people it’s a good fit – for others, there are other models that may suit them better.
Kudos too on producing your first product – it’s a trip getting that first product together and then putting it out there, and finally making some sales. Then if you’re lucky enough to get complimentary emails – wow, it makes it so worthwhile.
